WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS) that allows groups to easily maintain their websites while adhering to York’s templates.

Using WordPress for a Research Project site

On May 1, 2014, York University introduced a new, responsive WordPress theme template to the York Community for those with an online presence at York.

Highlights of this theme include:

  • a responsive design that automatically resizes to your visitors screen size making your site instantly mobile- and tablet-friendly;
  • use of the latest streamlined Global Navigation with a new, quick links collection of York links;
  • a clean and inviting design with user-friendly fonts, bursts of York red and plenty of white space, all of which reflects the YorkU brand; and
  • enhanced web accessibility to help meet AODA web accessibility requirements.
Accessibility RequirementsUnder the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), all new and significantly refreshed public websites and web content need to be accessible. As such, public websites that launch with or switch to the new York 2014 theme must conform to AODA web accessibility requirements. More information about the AODA accessibility requirements, training sessions, and resources can be found on the AODA Web Accessibility at York website.

Document Collaboration using Spaces

This service is where one or several users can add, modify or delete content online, via a web browser, using a simplified markup languages or a rich-text editor. It can be used for a variety of purposes, from a single-author web page to a multisectional collaborative website.

York University's service for this is at http://spaces.yorku.ca. This uses a commercial package called Confluence (view its online documentation).

Spaces itself consists of a collection of spaces. A space is an area within the service, containing your pages. You can think of each space as a sub-site, or mini-site, each with its own home page.

This service is available to York faculty members, research projects, administrative and academic units.
