It is important to cite not only the literature consulted but also the data uses, even if they are data files that you have produced. Citing gives the data producer appropriate credit and enables readers of your work to access the data for their own use or to replicate results.
Standards for data citation vary across disciplines. Some data repositories and archives provide formats for citing data as part of the metadata record for the dataset.
